MOVEMENTS

Music Boxes, Electronics

Movements consists of over one hundred manipulated music boxes powered by electric motors that are attached directly to the walls of a gallery.  Rose altered and reduced the melody of each music box by selectively bending back tines. Through this process of intervention the manufactured machines become individualized by human influence.  The altered motorized music boxes are grouped in sections throughout the gallery, each section connected to a timer that intermittently activates portions of the piece.  The result is a constantly shifting composition that uses the gallery walls as a resonating body, effectively engulfing the visitor in sound.
